Budget PC builds? How’s about fucking all PC builds? Who’s willing to pay that much money for a relatively small amount of RAM?
I was looking at upgrading my system to 2x48GB early 2025. It would have cost me around €300 back then, maybe €350 depending on the clock speed and timing. Which is a lot of money for memory, but a good amount to have for the future. With 32GB becoming the norm and 64GB as the premium option in the DDR4 era, upgrading to 96GB or even 128GB for DDR5 seemed like the next natural progression.
I had some other expenses and I felt my old system was doing just fine, so I postponed the upgrade. It’s not like computer hardware is going anywhere right? Wrong as it turns out, the same upgrade would set me back at least €1000 today and might be around €1500 depending on clock speed and timing.
This 3-5x increase in price is crazy and has absolutely killed my willingness to upgrade. I hope my old rig is good for a while yet, as it looks to be possible my last system for a long while.
I caved because I believe these new predictions, and settled last month for 32GB 6000MT/s CL32 at €430 instead of my planned 64. It’s a huge speed upgrade at least from my original, but to be fair… With inflation, €430 is exactly what I paid for 32GB 2400MHz CL16 in 2017
One of the things I need the most memory for is actually memory profiling. Running high memory usage workloads, combined with the profiler and all the debug information adds a huge amount of overhead. For profiling workloads of around 24GB you need 64GB in order to comfortably do that.
I was very lucky to have bought a new computer last year just before this nonsense. 64 GB is nice but I sure hope it holds for many years now since these prices are ridicc!

Purely out of curiosity, what are you using so much memory for? Do you do cad work or something?
