I already knew Linux. What it made me learn is systemd. And I’ll say it without shame, I like systemd. I know it doesn’t follow the Unix philosophy but it’s just semantics.
honestly, systemd isn’t that bad. I’m finishing some free labs for the CompTIA Linux+ sysadmin course and learning how to compose bash scripts into services is going to be great for my homelab.
I completely ditched windows at home in early 2020 and used fedora until last year when I took the plunge into NixOS. I knew how to do things in Linux, but I wanted to understand the underlying system structure. NixOS helped pull back the veil a bit.
For me, it falls into the pragmatic gap between idealism and usability. Is it perfect? Most certainly not. Does it serve a good portion of use cases? Apparently. Does it work as a more-or-less de facto standard to provide a common platform for other things to build on? Evidently.
If we could codify the resulting standards and assumptions and create a more modular ecosystem to plug that same gap, that would still be a lot of work, and at some point, most people just wanna build the damn house instead of overengineering the foundation.
Perfect is the enemy of good, and systemd has to be good enough.
