For people with the same BMI for instance, h8gher blood xyliyol was linked to higher cardiovascular accidents. In order to confirm, it would be better to check the article itself instead of this summary. It seems it is not published yet.
I read that to mean they did not take any of that into account. Since the data was independent of underlying factors, they ignored those underlying factors. Which were probably the actual factors.
