spoiler, everyone in a position to steer away from climate apocalypse is vested in steering toward it
I’m still convinced a big reason for the AI push is the energy needs mean a full run on remaining fossil fuels.
The rational thing would be to let it keep developing in small labs while we transition to renewables. Then after solving the energy crisis we’d be able to try and scale up AI.
Doing AI at present scale without renewable energy is stupid for everyone that isn’t making a shit ton off fossil fuels.
Even then, it doesn’t solve the water issue either.
We couldn’t afford to use AI even if it worked, that’s what people are missing, we flat out can’t afford the resources, we need them for humans right now.
I’m convinced they’re going all in on AI because they know climate change is locked in, will be significantly faster and worse than advertised, is going to cause massive global upheaval, and they’ll need a fully-automated totalitarian surveillance state and killbot army to protect themselves from the proles.
My bet is 3c by 2050, as in billions may starve in your lifetime.
This exactly!
Those in power thrive on scarcity.
If you see how China is using AI, it’s drastically different than how the U.S. is. They’re using it to benefit the country and the citizens, and are rapidly transitioning to renewables.
The US is going to be left with no resources and with people who hold trillions of dollars of a currency that everyone will agree is worthless.
Most are boomers who know they’ll die in the next decade. They don’t give a shit.
