  • The 14th Amendment regularized the situation of the children of freed slaves. Without it, the United States would have had a massive population of illegal immigrants who would have had to be dealt with God-knows-how, since they couldn’t be repatriated to a country they’ve never known - even if their parents even knew which country they came from, if there even was a country at all.

In fact, the entire legal argument of Miller, Trump and the racist posse currently soiling the White House is that the 14th was only truly meant to solve that particular problem and nothing else, and therefore doesn’t apply anymore.

As for other countries that apply jus soli, they usually started doing so to encourage immigration and promote a “more desirable” population (i.e. displace the native ones), or bring in cheap labor. The US itself greatly benefited from easy immigration in fact, as they’re beginning to find out the hard way now that the immigrant population is being forcibly removed.

  • We named one of our cats Snow White once. The cat was male and was bright orange ginger.

The reason we did that was this:

The cat was a street cat we had recently adopted. He didn’t have a name or anything: we just called him “The cat”. My son and I brought the cat to the vet to have him neutered. My son must have been 12 or so. The vet was a crusty old guy with overly polite, really obsequious, really old-fashioned manners. Nice guy, but zero humor and he seemed like he had been transported from the 19th century.

    The vet said:

“So you would like to have your little companion neutered, do you? I see… Who’s the animal’s owners if I may ask?”
    “My son is” I replied.
The vet turned to my son. “May I ask young Sir what the name of the animal is?”
“Snow White” my son said, with a deadpan face.

The guy was completely taken aback. There was ZERO reason to name that cat Snow White. But… he was too polite and too contrived to ask why.

So his face contorted with utter incomprehension for 5 seconds, then finally he said:

“I see. Then Snow White it is. Snow White… the male ginger cat…” as he wrote the name in the form.

    I nearly pissed myself laughing.

Later in the car, I asked my son why he said that. “I dunno” he replied, “I just wanted to shake him up a bit with some complete nonsense. I’ve never seen anyone this old-fashioned.”

And so for the next 10 years or so, we owned a male ginger cat called Snow White 🙂

  • Whoever posted this doesn’t understand wealth.

Wealth isn’t having enough money to buy a large house or an expensive car: it’s having enough money to hire employees to maintain your large house, or keeping your expensive car on the road, and paying taxes or both of them - or paying an accountant to dodge the taxes.

I knew a guy in the UK in the 90’s. He was a rent-a-cop, and his dream was to own a Lamborghini Countach. He put an ungodly amount of money on the side every month, and one day he had saved up enough to buy a used specimen of his dream car. Two months later, he needed to change the brake pads on all 4 wheels. That cost £20,000. He parked his pride and joy in his garage and then went back to riding the bus.

He managed to get a wealthy man’s toy, but he wasn’t a wealthy man so he couldn’t actually afford to enjoy his toy.
