See if the headers are duplicated somewhere else on the partition (at the end or somesuch).

Absolute nonsense. Unix GUIs and workstations predate Linux. The X Window System was first released in 1984, the Motif widget toolkit in 1989, and both were alternatives to existing proprietary GUIs. The workstation landscape was a Wild West before Windows prevailed.
