I was thinking a while ago that I missed chewing gum all the time and now I realize I may want to not pick up that habit again.

Xylitol is fantastic for dental health.

Im assuming theres some confounding factor like “people who chew a lot of gum and eat a lot of artificial sweeteners are also people who just eat a lot in general or have history of obesity/type 2 diabetes” or something until a dedicated study proves otherwise.

At least some of that seems to be taken into account already:

The researchers also highlighted that the association was independent of underlying factors such as body mass index, hypertension, diabetes and lipid levels, which might predispose people to low-calorie products.

Still agree more research is needed.

I read that to mean they did not take any of that into account. Since the data was independent of underlying factors, they ignored those underlying factors. Which were probably the actual factors.

I read it the other way around. For people with the same BMI for instance, h8gher blood xyliyol was linked to higher cardiovascular accidents.

In order to confirm, it would be better to check the article itself instead of this summary. It seems it is not published yet.
