That is another question, at the current crazy prices, even for SATA SSDs I would not upgrade in any case unless I realky need additional capacity.

The other topic you mentioned, LLM’s are going to hit a wall and they’ll do so hard. Training will be increasingly relegated to information predating large scale use if LLMs to avoid rapid degradation of the models by training it with LLM output. That in itself creates a huge problem the more time passes. Nothing is safe btw, analog media are increasingly just as tainted.

The problem is that SATA SSDs, at least in Europe, are rarily meaningfully cheaper than some cost effective PCIe3.0 or PCIe4.0 SSD. Well at least it was like that before the AI inflation.

That’s not the point. Let’s put aside that an LLM driven agent is not deterministic ie, not always doing what the user intended, just like regular text autocomplete messes up as well regularly. The point is that like with e-mails when spam became so easy to generate that it flooded the system, now more sophisticated actions on the internet get easier to do (that said, most of it was possible already before, just required more skill), at least as long as LLMs are not charged at real costs but highly subsidised.

At some point something has to give. Either tools will be developed to somewhat reliably classify the nature of the traffic or things will start to be priced out as everyone will have to pay the bill for this new kind of spam (ie low value high volume traffic, or ill intended traffic)

People are going to die because of that, even if AI is merely handling call “triage”.

The most fascinating thing is how some in the open source community go wild against a tiny player delivering one of the most daily driveable phones with an OS other than from the big-tech duopoly (besides Huawei but that’s another topic). Well, to begin with. That isn’t made sure and making it sure will delay the delayed projects considerably… which I am all for and is functionally similar to said moratorium. As this isn’t happening we see huge data centers being illegally built with incredibly dirty emergency gas turbines designed for emergency scenarios.

The main issue is that the data centers are built with monopoly money, which enabled them to suck up all resources, pricing out the real economy from critical materials, and services (especially construction, electricity, cooling, IT infrastructure …). This alone should make you understand why this wave of datacenters is bad, even if you don’t care one bit about the environment but at least a tiny bit about the economy.
