Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.
For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.
Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.
The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…

There are instances that do not federate with .ml. The one I’m on is such.
People should block users and instances that they dont want to see. They are in charge of their account. Then you wont have to feudpost about these people you blocked because you wont see them.
Welcome to a tutorial on how to block .ml on your personal account.
In the top right corner of the top of the page, there are 3 horizontal white bars. Click it.
This will open up a drop down menu. At the bottom of that menu, you will see your username. Click it.
This will open another drop down menu with 3 options. Click “Settings”.
At the top of your screen you will see 2 tabs. Click the one that says “Blocks”.
Here you will see “Block user” “Block community” and “Block instance”. Click the down arrow below “Block instance”.
This will open up a search bar. Type “lemmy.ml” and click it after it shows up. That’s it! You’ve blocked .ml and will never see content from the instance.
But wait, we aren’t done yet in this menu. Click the down arrow under “Block user”. Now type “UltraGiGaGigantic” Make sure you select my .ml account as the other ones I no longer use. Thanks, appreciate it.

That is honestly a real problem, that you do not automatically block the users from an instance, when you block the entire instance.
I won’t block anyone even if their straight up assholes because even a broken clock is right twice a day and I actually have learned some information that was true from them.
That being said though the ones who say North Korea is a utopia and USA is fighting a proxy war with Russia through Ukraine (true) but that Russia giving drones and military equipment to Iran isn’t the same thing and that isn’t a proxy war or that Mao was some sort hero of the people (I could definitely go on from here) those people are idiots and its very easy to look up anything they say and see that its complete bullshit.
I’m still not gonna block them. Hit them with an “Ok” and move on with your day. As soon as you pull out the graphs or cite multiple sources they will just ban you so there’s no point in fucking with them. Until they post on here from North Korea and prove us all wrong, you can easily disregard any of the bullshit they say.
That said the ONE person I have ever blocked on Lemmy was someone who posted a cartoon picture of a little kids butt on the self hosted community. I still don’t understand what that was about and I not only blocked them but reported them for that too. But other than child stuff, I probably won’t ever block anyone even if they’re complete assholes.

I’m of course banned from their echo chamber because the cow one tried showing a chart of how there’s no hunger in North Korea and got pissed when I pointed out that the North Korean government doesn’t even provide that data publicly and that it was “not really about telling the truth” when someone picks and presents false data like that to spread a false narrative. They reported me and got me banned for “imperialism”.
It is funny too because they let you talk riiiight up until the point where you can prove them absolutely wrong with multiple sources some even from the very government they’re fan girling over and then they immediately report and ban you and delete all the comments you made.

I just switch to my subscribed instances when I get tired of All.
Thats the correct answer. If too much stupid stuff gets past the block filters its handy just to switch to the subscribed tab.
Of course this may not get rid of people posting tiring stuff on the subscribed instances, but block filters also seem to work for communities - honestly, thats what I mainly use as instance blocks seem too overboard. Overtly sexist or ageist instances get blocked tho.
I don’t block anything. I just subscribed to a lot of instances that I thought looked interesting or fun.
That was also my initial strategy, until I had the idea of separating politics and less annoying stuff into different accounts - block lists pretty much helped with that.
I don’t like Russia but people supporting Russia doesn’t bother me near as much as people supporting the US/West. Yet I still haven’t blocked lemmy.world which is not only blatantly pro-west, but so heavily biased that most people legit think they aren’t, like I can tell they’re being sincere.
And if I ever block it or any instance/community/user, I won’t make a fuss about it, I’ll merely enjoy the peace of mind of not dealing with them. I’m happy for you that you won’t have to deal with these people anymore, I’ve blocked a few communities and instances as well and I love the fact we’re able to do it, that we get some level of control over what we see on our feed as opposed to some algorithm forcing us to pay attention to stuff that hurts us. There are a few instances where like 90% of the problematic content and users come from. Blocking them makes the fediverse FAR more enjoyable and pleasant. And reduces the harassment and violent content by 90%

Sure it might be partially true (as per your link Taiwan’s rate is actually lower), the implication that thus North Korea is a good place to live on however doesn’t follow.
As a psychologist, suicide is one of the most complex mental health phenomena. Most often than not, it is completely detached from life quality or living satisfaction. It’s multi factor and it says nothing of what the meme implies.
Counterexamples exist. Rusia has a higher suicide rate than all of those countries, Cuba as well. And it doesnt get more capitalist than the UK and they also have a very low rate comparable to north Korea. Suicide has nothing to do with political ideology of the government in power.
